In this blog post you can read about what golden milk is, where is comes from and how to make Golden milk yourself from scratch.
What is golden milk?
Golden milk is originally an Ayurvedic drink from India, also known as haldi doodh. It basically is milk infused with turmeric and it’s supposed to be very soothing. In Indian culture it is used against many ailments because of its anti-inflammatory properties! As the drink is warm and soothing, it is perfect to drink in the evening to help you relax and wind down before going to bed.
Recipes you find online can vary, but often they contain ingredients like turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, black pepper, honey and any type of milk. The turmeric is what gives the drink a yellow or golden color, which is why it can be called golden milk.

Golden milk recipe
In this variation of golden milk, I use a lot of different spices. And instead of making just one cup every morning, a time saving hack it to make a ”paste” which you can store in a small glass jar and keep in the fridge. That way you save a lot of time, as you just need to warm up some type of milk, take 1-2 teaspoons of the paste and let it dissolve into the milk. It takes around 10-15 minutes to make the paste. For this recipe you can choose to use fresh ingredients or grounded herbs. Preferably organic of course!
Ingredients for Golden milk paste
About 14 servings
- 2 tbsp turmeric
- 2 tsp ginger
- 2 tsp cardamom
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 4 tsp coconut oil
- 100 ml water
- 1 tbsp raw honey
- Put all the ingredients (except for the honey) into a saucepan and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Don’t let the mixture boil excessively! Boiling can destroy some nutrients and lower the effectiveness of some substances.
- Keep stirring the mixture while it simmers for 4-6 minutes until it turns into a thick and smooth paste.
- Take the saucepan of the heat and let it cool for a few minutes. When it has cooled down a bit, stir in the honey.
- Transfer the paste into a clean glass jar with a lid. It will hold for around 2-3 weeks in the fridge.
Making the golden milk
→ Heat up about 300 ml of plant-based milk (my personal favorite is oat milk!) and mix 1-2 teaspoons of the paste into it and stir until dissolved.
That’s it!
I prefer to drink golden milk in the morning because I’m not very hungry as I first wake up and therefor not feel like eating yet. Although, when I don’t eat anything I end up hungry, cranky and with a headache instead! Then this rich and creamy Indian beverage a perfect start of the day because it is both nutritious and delicious.
