9 Tips on How to Grow your Hair Faster Naturally

Maybe your hairdresser cut of half of your hair when you only wanted a trim…
Maybe you regret your new haircut. Or maybe you just want to speed up your hair growth and fulfill your childhood dream to have hair like Rapunzel!
Whatever the reason, in this blog post I have put together my 9 BEST tips on how to grow your hair faster naturally.

There is absolutely no need to waste your money on expensive hair supplements or magical hair serums if you know these tips.

Your hair grows an average of 1.25 cm (1/2 inch) per month. It depends on several factors such as age, health and hair type. Of course, we want to maximize the capacity of our hair growth so we can grow out healthy long and lustrous locks!

9 Tips on How to Grow your Hair Faster Naturally

1. Don’t wash your hair with shampoo too often

Washing your hair too frequently will strip your hair strands from the natural oil that your scalp produces to nourish and protect your hair! Striping off these oils all the time will not benefit your hair growth and can make your scalp dry and hair brittle. Opt to wash your hair 1-3 times a week with a good natural shampoo and always condition your ends. If you want natural shampoo tips, this is my favorite natural shampoo & conditioner.

If you are used to wash your hair with shampoo more than 1-3 times a week, try to gradually extend the times between washes so your scalp can get used to it. However, it should be said that if your scalp is super greasy, shampooing it to get it clean is actually better than leaving it like that for too long. This because oil collects dirt, which in turn can clog up the hair follicles (which we don’t want either!). Just keep a good balance!

2. Use rosemary oil on your scalp

Rosemary oil is a completely naturally ingredient that has been scientifically proven to promote hair growth as much as minoxodil (a medication prescribes against hair loss). So much so that even conventional dermatologists finally recommend it!

You can use rosemary oil on your scalp by putting a few drops of rosemary essential oil in about a tablespoon of a carrier oil like jojoba or argan oil. Then massage your scalp with it and let it sit for a few hours. You can also put 1-2 drops in your shampoo when washing your hair and let it sit for a few minutes before washing it off. However, don’t put undiluted rosemary essential oil directly on your scalp as it will most certainly lead to irritation!

3. Inverted scalp massages

Scalp massages are great for stimulating hair growth! By massaging the scalp you increase blood circulation which then encourages your hair to grow faster. Using gravity by hanging upside down increases the blood flow to your scalp, which makes the method even more effective.

To do the inverted scalp massage, lay on the edge of your bed or your couch so your head is comfortably upside down. Massage your scalp gently with your fingertips for 4-5 minutes. Do this every day for maximum effect!

On hair washing days, you can use warm oil for your scalp massage. You can use oils like jojoba oil, castor oil and also add in the rosemary oil. The warmth will open up your hair follicles so the oils can penetrate the scalp deeper, which will increase the benefits of the scalp massage even more! But keep in mind that you will have to wash your hair afterwards, as the oil makes your hair pretty greasy.

4. Take care of the ends of your hair

The reason why we need to trim our hair from time to time is because of split ends. A split end forms when the tip of the hair splinters, which makes the hair strand look damaged and breakable. Eventually the hair strand with the split end will break of somewhere or split further and further, leaving the hair strand shorter and damaged.

There is no way to fix split ends. The only way to get rid of them is to cut them off. But we don’t want to cut our hair off do we?! That is why it is so important to take care of your ends, so they don’t split and you don’t have to get a trim so often.

You can take care of your ends by putting a nourishing hair oil on them between washes. This way you protect and prevent them from drying out. You can also put oil on them before you are going to wash your hair. The oil will protect your ends from hot water and shampoo. Other things you can do to protect your ends is avoid using heat and plastic hair ties.

5. Exercise

You didn’t see this one coming didn’t you?! Well exercise increases blood circulation in the whole body, also to to the scalp. Blood flow in the scalp promotes healthy hair growth because essential nutrients get the chance to reach the hair follicles.

Also, exercise reduces stress and the stress hormone called cortisol. Too much cortisol in our bodies can actually lead to hair loss! That’s why exercise is great for growing out long and healthy hair.

6. Avoid dyeing your hair

One thing that I noticed was that as soon all of my dyed hair had grown out, it started to get really long! Dyeing or bleaching your hair will maybe not directly affect your hair growth (if you don’t dye the roots that will say). Although, the harsh chemicals in the hair dye will certainly cause damage to your hair and make it more breakable.

If your hair breaks off, it both gets thinner and shorter. So try to avoid dyeing your hair to get it longer faster (and to save some money 😉 )

7. Nourish it from the inside out.

If you are healthy, it’s is going to show from the inside out. And what you eat is so important for your health! Make sure to eat well balanced and healthy meals, to give your body the nutrients it needs to be able to grow out beautiful, healthy and strong hair.

Nutrients that are extra important for hair growth are proteins, biotin, B vitamins, vitamin A, C, D & E, omega-3 fatty acids and zinc! These nutrients are included in foods like meat, eggs, dairy, berries & fruits, leafy greens, fatty fish, nuts & seeds and avocados.

8. Brush your hair with a boar bristle or wooden brush

Brushing your hair with a boar bristle brush or a wooden brush will distribute all the nourishing oils from the scalp to your hair strands. The ends of your hair actually need those oils the most! When you brush from your scalp and downwards, you also massage the scalp which promotes a healthy hair growth.

Plastic brushes can really damage your hair. They often are really stiff so the hair easily breaks while brushing it. Also they don’t distribute the oils as well and can make your hair static. Lessening the damage by brushing with a good quality brush, will lead to needing fewer trims and actually give your hair a chance to get long!

9. Don’t trim your hair to often

Have you ever heard the tip: trim your hair every 6-8 weeks to promote hair growth? Well I REALLY disagree with that tip! Firstly, your hair grows from you scalp, not from the ends. Cutting the ends off will therefore not promote your hair growth. What it does is that it prevents split ends from splitting even further.

Frequent trims will certainly make your hair look fuller, BUT it will also make it shorter.
Almost every time I go to the hairdresser to get a trim, they will cut of more than necessary and all my hair growth progress would be reset (which is why I now cut my own split ends). Cutting off split ends will not prevent them, so once you’re rid of them a much better option is to take care of your ends so you can trim it less frequently.

If you follow these tips, you will really notice a difference on your hair growth! Not only will it become longer, it will become much healthier too.

To keep track on your hair growth, you can start by measuring your hair with a measuring-tape and write down the length. Then follow these tips and measure again after a few months!

I hope these tips will help!

Hi. Thank you for your tips (no pun intended, but hope to be achieved:). I am 56 and have never had hair longer than my neck. It’s my last chance, as I have been diagnosed with Alopecia. Wish me luck. I will let you know how it works! 🙄🙏
