It can be difficult to find true and effective non toxic shampoo and conditioners, especially with all the greenwashing out there. That’s why I’ve done the job for you and made a list of 8 great non-toxic shampoo and conditioners for you to choose from! I’ve literally researched every ingredient in the ingredient list to see if the non toxic shampoo and conditioners actually are what they claim to be.

This is not like other lists you find on the internet. From what I’ve seen the natural or non-toxic shampoo and conditioners recommended by others all contain some products with questionable ingredients. But not this one. This list is 100% transparent, and if there’s even one ingredient that is questionable, I will tell you. With this list you can be sure that it’s TRULY non toxic!

So if you are looking for the best non toxic shampoo and conditioners for you, look no further! Here is a list of great products for you to choose from depending on your wants, needs and hair type.

8 Great Non Toxic Shampoo and Conditioners

All of the products on the list are available in Europe (yeeeey!), which is quite rare on lists of products you find online as most of the recommended products often are from the US. Be sure to read until the end to see which known ”natural” brands are often recommended by other but DIDN’T make it on the list!

1. Calia Organic Purifying shampoo & conditioner

Calia Natural is a small and independent beauty care company based in Canada. Their Organic Purifying shampoo & conditioner are my favorite non toxic shampoo and conditioner ever! Both the products are 100% toxic free and do not contain any other unnecessary ingredients, yet they’re super effective and cost friendly.

Calia purifying shampoo and conditioner contain Spanish rosemary and Clary sage, which both stimulate healthy hair growth. They furthermore contain nourishing oils and herb extracts that help you obtain your healthy natural hair dream! 2. 100% Pure Kelp & Mint Volumizing shampoo & conditioner.

This is another shampoo & conditioner that is 100% toxic free, gently cleanses your scalp and moisturizes your ends. When I used this shampoo my scalp felt thoroughly cleansed and my hair smelled super fresh afterwards! If I ever run out of my Calia shampoo and can’t get my hands on it again, this will be the shampoo & conditioner I would go to. However, the shampoo does contain salt. While this is a non-toxic ingredient, it has a clarifying effect and could dry out your scalp if it’s very sensitive.

100% Pure is an American brand focusing on creating 100% clean beauty products. When I checked the ingredient list of their hair products I noticed that indeed each and every one of their shampoos and conditioners are 100% non toxic. So if you rather want a Honey & Coconut or Moisture Drenching shampoo, you could go for those as well!

3. Living Libations True Blue Spirulina Shampoo & Conditioner

Living libations is another green beauty brand based in Canada. All of their shampoo and conditioners are 100% non-toxic and contain nourishing ingredients like spirulina, blue tansy and chamomile that calms and moisturizes the scalp, leading to thick, healthy and shiny hair. If you have dry hair, the True Blue Spirulina conditioner is perfect to drench it in moisture and help prevent split ends. If however your hair is more on the oilier side, they also have a Seabuckthorn shampoo for oily hair.
The only downside to this brand is that it’s quite pricey.

4. Odylique Gentle Herb Shampoo & Prebiotic, Coconut & Chamomile Conditioner

Odylique is a company based in England. These 100% non-toxic shampoo and conditioners are perfect if you have a sensitive scalp, as it gently cleanses the scalp with natural herbs and oils. The gentle herb shampoo also contains horsetail extract, which promotes healthy hair follicles and strenghtens the hair.

The coconut & chamomile conditioner is great especially on dry and brittle hair. Except for coconut, chamomile and prebiotic chicoria this conditioner also contains Shea butter, calendula and aloe vera juice. These ingredients all help with smoothing and locking in moisture into your hair strands, leaving them soft and hydrated.

One thing that I will note is that both the conditioner and shampoo contain alcohol, which is a non-toxic but dehydrating ingredient that’s most likely in there for the consistency and stability of the product.

5. Bruns Nº01 Coconut Shampoo & Conditioner*

Bruns is a Swedish hair care company that offers a range of toxic free shampoos for different hair types. One great thing is that they offer a scent free option for almost all of their products.

Their Nr01 Coconut shampoo & conditioner suits most hair types especially normal to dry hair. The products are handmade and organic and gives moisture and volume to the hair.

*However, Bruns conditioners are not 100% toxic free because they contain one ingredient that isn’t non-toxic: Behenamidopropyl Dimethylamine. While it isn’t the worst ingredient and has a positive effect on your hair, there are some restrictions about it. You will have to decide for yourself if the conditioner will get a pass, or if you combine their shampoo with another conditioner that doesn’t contain Behenamidopropyl Dimethylamine.

6. Rahua Classic Shampoo

Rahua is one of the more luxurious natural shampoo brands. These products contains sustainably sourced ungurahua nut oil, which grows in the Amazon rainforest. Ungarahua oil has shown to be a really nourishing hair oil as it strenghtens the hair shaft, prevents hair loss and gives your hair strands a beautiful luster. All of Rahuas shampoos are 100% toxic free, so you can choose whichever you like! Except for their classic shampoo they also have other shampoos, like their hydrating shampoo and voluminous shampoo, so you can choose depending on what your hair needs.

Their conditioners doesn’t make it on this list because it actually contains three ingredients that are considered toxic: Behentrimonium Chloride, Behentrimonium Methosulfate & Stearalkonium Chloride. So I recommend that you choose another conditioner from this list to go with this shampoo.

7. Sante Moisturising Mango & Aloe Vera Shampoo

Sante Naturkosmetik is a German natural cosmetic brand. All their shampoos are 100% non toxic, but do contain alcohol, which like said before, is a non toxic but dehydrating ingredient.

My favorite shampoo of this brand is their moisturizing mango & aloe vera shampoo, because it smells so incredible! It’s also the most budget friendly non toxic shampoo on this list. The shampoo gently cleanses the scalp without making the hair dry. I bought this shampoo for my boyfriend because his hair gets super dry from regular shampoos, and this shampoo worked great and truly moisturized his hair!

They have a conditioner to go with the shampoo as well, but unfortunately they don’t make it on this list because they contain two ingredients that aren’t toxic free: Stearamidopropyl dimethylamine & Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate. While these ingredients may be fine for you, I still want to point them out.

8. Innersense Clarity Hairbath Shampoo

Clarity Hairbath shampoo is a hypoallergenic shampoo from Innersense that is 100% toxic-free. It gently cleanses your scalp and contains soothing ingredients for those with a sensitive or irritated scalp. It also contains plant extracts with amino acids which help to moisturize and protect hair strands. 

The good thing with hypoallergenic products is that they often don’t contain unnecessary irritating ingredients such as fragrance and colorants. While this particular shampoo is toxic free, I’ve seen that other Innersense shampoos contain Sodium benzoate, which is a problematic ingredient when combined with ascorbic acid.

Their conditioners have the same problem as Rahuas and therefore don’t make it on this list. They contain two toxic ingredients: Behentrimonium Methosulfate & Stearalkonium Chloride. So again I recommend another conditioner with this shampoo.

Last thoughts on Non Toxic Shampoo and Conditioners

These are some of the brands that I’ve found that are toxic free. Depending on how hardcore you are, you may find that one or two ”should avoid” ingredients don’t matter to you or makes that you don’t even want to consider purchasing it! You decide for yourself.

Today there fortunately are a lot of natural and organic hair care products to choose from, as sustainable and organic products become more and more popular! Here are some known brands that didn’t make it on this list after checking their ingredient list, even though I thought they would!:

• • John Masters Organics– Contains Cocamidopropyl Betaine and Sodium benzoate in shampoo. Contains Behentrimonium Methosulfate, benzyl alchohol, sodium benzoate, Stearalkonium Chloride in conditioner.

• • Urtekram– Contains perfume, which is an umbrella term that can contain hundreds of hidden ingredients. There is however a fragrance free one which has 100% clean ingredients! Their conditioners contain Distearoylethyl Dimonium Chloride and propandiol, and therefore not toxic free. 

• • Dessert Essence– Contains perfume, but there’s a fragrance free shampoo that’s 100% toxic free! Also watch out for benzyl alcohol. Their conditioner (also fragrance free) contains Behentrimonium chloride, which should be avoided.
